1. Start with the official syllabus, not with a book
Every exam body publishes a content outline that lists exactly what can be tested and how heavily each topic is weighted. Read it first and turn it into a checklist. Any guide, video or set of notes you use afterwards should be measured against that list.
2. Plan your calendar around topic weights
Topics with a large weighting deserve more of your study hours, and they should be covered early so you have time to revise them. Give each topic a fixed number of weeks and leave the final weeks for full-length mock exams under timed conditions.
3. Practise questions, then review every wrong answer
Reading builds familiarity, but exams reward application. Do questions in small daily batches, and for each mistake write down why the correct answer is right and what made your answer tempting. Patterns in your mistakes tell you where to spend the next week.
4. Check the edition and the exam window
Accounting standards, tax rules and exam formats change. A study text that is two years old can teach rules that no longer apply, and the CPA Exam structure itself changed in 2024. Before you rely on any material, confirm that it matches the exam window you plan to sit.
5. Be careful with unofficial copies of publishers' books
PDF copies of textbooks and question banks that circulate in messaging groups are often outdated, incomplete or shared without the publisher's permission. Buy or download from the official source. It is usually cheaper than a failed attempt.
